Cosmos is an ecosystem of independent blockchains that can communicate and transact with each other through an interoperable protocol. Known as the Internet of Blockchains, Cosmos enables developers to launch application-specific blockchains — each with their own tokens, consensus, and governance — while still being connected through a shared hub.Its native asset, ATOM, is used to secure the Cosmos Hub and govern its development. Cosmos aims to create a decentralized network of sovereign blockchains that scale and interoperate without relying on a single chain.

2016: Cosmos is conceptualized by Jae Kwon, who co-founds Tendermint Inc. (later Ignite) and introduces the Tendermint BFT consensus.
2017: The Interchain Foundation is formed in Switzerland. Cosmos raises ~$17 million via ICO.
2019: The Cosmos Hub launches as the first live chain using the Cosmos SDK and IBC architecture.
2021: IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) is enabled, allowing tokens and data to flow between Cosmos chains.
2022–2024: Dozens of “zones” (sovereign blockchains) go live — including Osmosis, Injective, Secret, Juno, Evmos, and more. Cosmos Hub introduces liquid staking, interchain security, and expanded governance.
Cosmos SDK: A developer framework to build customizable, sovereign blockchains — used by chains like Osmosis, Terra, Cronos, and more.
Tendermint Core (CometBFT): A Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus engine with fast finality, supporting proof-of-stake and delegated staking.
IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication): A protocol that allows Cosmos chains to send tokens and data to each other, permissionlessly and securely.
Cosmos Hub: The original Cosmos blockchain that connects other zones and supports ATOM staking and governance.
Interchain Security (Replicated Security): Cosmos Hub validators can secure other chains, allowing new zones to borrow security.
CosmWasm: A smart contract platform (in Rust) integrated into many Cosmos chains to enable DeFi, NFTs, and dApps.
Sovereign Chains: Each Cosmos zone is independently governed and economically self-contained — no central chain dependency.
On-Chain Governance: Cosmos chains use on-chain voting to decide everything from protocol upgrades to treasury spending.
Cosmos Hub DAO: ATOM holders govern the Cosmos Hub and its roadmap through referenda and proposals.
Interchain Foundation: A nonprofit that funds the Cosmos ecosystem, research, and protocol development.
Independent Zones: Every chain in the Cosmos ecosystem (e.g., Osmosis, Stargaze, Akash) has its own governance, tokens, and priorities.
Validator Economy: Cosmos has hundreds of active validators securing various zones with delegated proof-of-stake.
Cosmos Community: One of the most vibrant multi-chain communities in Web3, active in governance, building, and research — especially strong in Asia, LATAM, and Europe.
