Bitcoin Ordinals
Bitcoin Ordinals started as a mailing list post on the bitcoin-dev mailing list back in 2022 with a corresponding GitHub repository for the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal and went live in January 2023. The basic idea is that by serially numbering every Satoshi in a series starting with 0 you get ordinal numbers that can be used as stable identifiers such as for NFTs or even including smart contract functionality (as exemplified here with sCrypt). As pointed out in this article, the fact that NFTs for a specific Satoshi can be associated (through inscriptions) with a specific time could mean that we could have NFT artwork related to key moments in Bitcoin’s history allowing many to consider these Sats as rare such as exemplified in this article. There are several other use cases and one example is MikroStrategy using Ordinals for identity solutions as shown in this article. Ordinals have also received some criticism such as for example in regard to increasing the size of the Bitcoin blocks with average size going up as shown in this article.
