Midnight(NIGHT)

Midnight is a privacy-first blockchain built by the team behind Cardano. Apps can keep data private and still prove what needs proving. Buy or sell NIGHT with NOK, EUR or USDM on NBX.

Privacy you can switch on, proof you can share

Most blockchains make every transaction public. Midnight keeps sensitive data private by default and lets users reveal only what a counterparty, auditor or regulator needs to see.

  • Selective disclosure

Zero-knowledge proofs confirm that something is true, like your age or residency, without exposing the data behind it.

  • Built for developers

Smart contracts are written in Compact, a language based on TypeScript, so web developers can start building quickly. Contracts can already be deployed on mainnet.

  • Connected to Cardano

Midnight runs as a partner chain to Cardano and is designed to connect with other blockchains over time.

Not all public, not all hidden

Midnight calls this rational privacy. Each app decides what stays private and what can be proven, instead of choosing between full transparency and full secrecy.

Prove who you are, privately

With decentralised identifiers, you control your own identity. You can prove your age, residency or accreditation without handing over your address or documents.

Compliance without collecting data

A decentralised exchange can check that a user is accredited through a private proof, without becoming a central store of personal data.

A private backbone for AI agents

Midnight aims to let AI agents carry out strategies across blockchains without exposing the personal data of the people they act for.

A distribution still under way

NIGHT is being distributed in phases, starting with the Glacier Drop for holders of ADA, BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, BNB, AVAX and BAT. Claimed tokens unlock gradually in four 25% installments, 90 days apart. How the distribution works

NIGHT and DUST

Midnight separates the token you hold from the resource you spend. Holding NIGHT generates DUST, which pays for transactions. Keeping the tradable asset separate from the fee resource helps make fees more predictable.

NIGHT Tradable on NBX

  • Public and visible on the ledger
  • Used for governance and network security
  • Generates DUST while you hold it
  • Supply of 24 billion tokens

DUST Network resource

  • Shielded resource that powers transactions
  • Regenerates over time while you hold NIGHT
  • Decays if unused
  • Non-transferable, so it works like a recharging allowance rather than a tradable coin
  • Generation can be designated to an external DUST address

Common questions

What is Midnight?

Midnight is a blockchain developed by Input Output, the company behind Cardano. It uses zero-knowledge proofs so apps can keep data private while still proving that rules have been followed.

What is the difference between NIGHT and DUST?

NIGHT is the public, tradable token used for governance and network security. DUST is a shielded, non-transferable resource that pays for transactions. It is generated by holding NIGHT, regenerates over time and decays if unused. DUST itself cannot be sent on, but NIGHT holders can designate DUST generation to an external DUST address. How to designate DUST generation

I held ADA on NBX. Am I getting NIGHT from the Glacier Drop?

Customers who held ADA on NBX at the snapshot on 11 June 2025 qualify for NIGHT pro rata, meaning in proportion to their share of ADA held at that time. NBX claimed the tokens on behalf of eligible customers. The Glacier Drop is still under way: claimed tokens thaw (unlock) in four 25% installments, 90 days apart, and NBX distributes each installment as it thaws. NBX charges a fee of up to 10% to cover custody and the administration of the unlock schedule. For more general information on the glacier airdrop not related to NBX read more in the Midnight distribution FAQ.

Where can I read the official NIGHT white paper?

The Midnight Foundation publishes a MiCA white paper for NIGHT: midnight.gd/night-mica-white-paper.

For developers

How do developers build on Midnight?

Smart contracts on Midnight are written in Compact, a language based on TypeScript, which lowers the barrier for web developers. Contracts can already be deployed on mainnet. The official developer documentation is at docs.midnight.network.

How does a Midnight contract keep data private?

Midnight uses a dual-state model. Sensitive logic runs in a private, shielded environment, while a public state handles consensus, governance and final settlement. Zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-SNARKs) confirm that the private part followed the rules without revealing the underlying data, and each contract decides what to keep private and what to disclose.

What technology does Midnight build on?

Midnight runs as a partner chain to Cardano and draws on the security of Cardano's main chain. Its execution environment, known internally as Kachina, is optimised for private computation. Midnight also describes research such as folding, which makes zero-knowledge proofs more efficient, and Minotaur, a consensus protocol combining proof of work and proof of stake, as part of its longer-term design.
